Pontiac 287 V8 Engine

The Pontiac 287 was the first of the “small journal” engines introduced by Pontiac in 1955. Known as the “Strato Streak,” it was designed as a cast iron engine. More than 500,000 287’s were made that year which was quite quite a large amount considering when it was done. The 287 was the first Pontiac engine to feature a 12 volt electrical system. In 1956, Pontiac discontinued the 287 to make way for the Pontiac 316 V8. The Pontiac 347 V8 was also based on the 287 engine design.
