Ford 429 V8 Engine

The Ford 429 engine was first introduced in 1968 and stayed in production until 1973. It belonged to the 385 Ford engine family that included the Ford 460 and the Ford 370. There were several versions of the 429 produced over its 6-year production run which includes the Cobra Jet, Super Cobra Jet, and Thunder Jet. The 429 gained a lot of popularity in general due to the earlier success of the 427 and 428 Ford engines that did quite well in the racing circuits.

The 429, however, did not officially become a legend until 1969 when Ford introduced the Boss 429 Mustang. Like most 429 powered cars, the horsepower was extremely underrated in order to keep insurance companies happy. The Boss 429 was no exception of course with a factory rating of 375 horsepower. In actuality, a 429 Boss engine produced over 500 horsepower.

Today the 429 can be found in many Lincoln, Mercury and Ford models produced in the late 60s and early 70s. If you are looking for a lower priced older classic with a good amount of horsepower (or potential horsepower) under the hood then any of these cars with a Ford 429 would be a good option. Replacement parts for this engine are readily available.
